We crunched the numbers across 12 French cities. Here's where your money goes furthest — and what you give up for the lower price tag.

The price gap is bigger than most students realise

International students often compare France to their home countries and conclude it's expensive. That conclusion is partly right and mostly wrong. France has enormous variation between cities — a student in Grenoble spends roughly half what a student in Nice spends per month. If cost is a real constraint, choosing the right city matters more than almost any other decision.

The cheapest cities: where your money goes furthest

Grenoble — Total ~€1,000/month (studio + living)

Grenoble is the most affordable major student city in France. Studio rents average €620/month, and living costs are among the lowest of any French university city. The transport pass is €35/month. What you're trading: Grenoble is smaller, the winters are cold, and the job market is concentrated in engineering and tech. But if that's your field, it's genuinely exceptional value.

Rennes — Total ~€1,030/month

Rennes consistently ranks as one of the most liveable cities in France, and the prices reflect a city that doesn't need to oversell itself. Rent at €630/month for a studio, living costs around €400/month excluding rent. Strong digital and cybersecurity sector if that's your career path.

Nantes — Total ~€1,100/month

Nantes sits in a sweet spot: major enough to have real career opportunities (Airbus, Naval Group, a growing startup scene), affordable enough that students aren't stressed about money every month. The €650/month studio rent is among the lowest for a city of this size.

Montpellier — Total ~€1,130/month

Montpellier has something no other French city can offer: completely free public transport for residents of the metropolitan area. Students with a local address pay nothing for buses and trams. With studio rents at €700/month and Mediterranean sunshine included, it's exceptional value. The safety rating is lower than average — something to factor in.

Lille — Total ~€1,140/month

Often overlooked because it's in the north, Lille is one of France's great student cities. The student transport pass is just €30/month, food costs are low, and the social scene is disproportionately good for the price. The Eurostar connection to London is useful if you have family or internship interests in the UK.

The middle tier

Toulouse — Total ~€1,200/month

Toulouse costs slightly more than the cities above but delivers significantly more for it: France's #1 ranked student city in 2025, 120,000+ students, and Airbus, Thales, and Safran all headquartered here for internships. The value-for-money ratio is strong.

Strasbourg — Total ~€1,220/month

Strasbourg is priced fairly for what it offers: a genuinely European city with EU institutions, a prestigious university, and exceptional cycling infrastructure.

The expensive tier

Bordeaux — Total ~€1,320/month

Bordeaux is beautiful and the social scene is excellent, but prices have risen sharply over the past five years as the city became fashionable. Budget carefully.

Lyon — Total ~€1,350/month

Lyon's costs are justified by its career opportunities and quality of life, but it's firmly in the expensive bracket. The CAF housing benefit helps.

Aix-en-Provence — Total ~€1,400/month

Small city, Provençal charm, premium pricing. Only makes financial sense if Sciences Po Aix or KEDGE is your specific target.

Nice — Total ~€1,470/month

Nice is stunning and the international business school scene (SKEMA, EDHEC) is excellent, but the cost is real. Budget at least €1,500/month for your own studio including rent.

Paris — Total ~€1,680/month

Paris is the outlier. Studio rents averaging €1,230/month make it nearly twice as expensive as Grenoble for housing alone. The career and cultural upside is real — but so is the financial pressure.
